1-1-12 - eames starter

Vintage Eames shell chairs - and the Saarinen Executive chairs - in our dining room

Decided to start the New Year with some design inspiration in the form of the new PBS American Masters about Charles and Ray Eames, two of the designers we most admire. This is definitely worth watching as it offers fascinating information about Ray and the workings of the Eames Office. As a married couple designing in tandem, it is always incredible to see how others do it!

We did not realize that Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen (another icon in our mind and our dog, Eero’s, namesake) collaborated in 1940 on the Organic Chair, as the winning entry in the “Organic Design in Home Furnishings” competition held in 1941 by the Museum of Modern Art in NY. The chair never went into production, as the designers vision was ahead of the capabilities of technology at the time. They went their own ways and each created iconic, organically-shaped chairs in the following decades. Our dining room features a mix of chairs by both designers and we always loved the way the assortment looked – I guess we now understand why! Even more interesting is that Vitra finally put the Organic Chair into production in 2006, as well as a Highback and Conference version.

We are crazy for documentaries about artists and designers. What are your favorite design docs?
