4-8-15 - Cluck cluck – custom wallpaper in NYC

Papa Poule wallpaper

The mighty chicken - inspiration for the new restaurant Papa Poule and the wallpaper design

Surface designer Candice Kaye and restauranteur Elisa Marshall of Mamannyc recently contacted us to assist in bringing to life their vision for a custom wallpaper for Elisa’s newest NYC food destination, Papa Poule. The new concept, with partners Michelin starred chef Armand Arnal and Benjamin Sormonte, is a french-inspired rotisserie chicken take-out and delivery in the heart of SoHo.

Thus, it was a natural choice to wallpaper the space in a chicken pattern created by Candice. She provided us with her charming sketch that had an almost vintage inspired quality and we consulted on the final repeat pattern, provided options for various scales and then digitally printed the wallpaper in our studio.

This custom wallpaper design adds just the right old-world vibe to the urban location that seeks to recall the owners’ own Sunday evening dinners spent enjoying marinated chicken with their families.

Creating custom wallpaper is one of our favorite aspects of our studio life, as we love helping designers communicate a mood which can transform and define an interior. Our in-house digital wallpaper printing services offer almost endless opportunities for creativity. Pleasure working with you Candice and Elisa!

1-26-15 - LMS wallpaper: a collaboration with the children of Litchfield Montessori School

We recently had the opportunity to collaborate with the children of the Litchfield Montessori School to create a digitally printed wallpaper to be auctioned off at a school fundraiser.

Every student, from toddler to 6th grade, painted a small non-objective painting which was given to us as the artwork and inspiration for the wallpaper. We then had the pleasurable task of creating a custom, repeatable pattern featuring each student work.

In the process of scanning and digitizing the paintings, we were able to enjoy the unique quality of each piece. We could see the personalities of each of the children in their brush strokes and color choices. Some created a motif with lines and shapes while others painted fields of their favorite hues.

We chose to highlight the individualism of each child by creating a gridded polka dot pattern with each painting as its own dot. By digitally printing this wallpaper, we were able to properly represent the vibrant colors and painterly nature of the work.

It was a joy and honor to collaborate with the children of the Litchfield Montessori School. There was a feeling of gratification in watching the kids pick out their paintings and beg their parents to be the winning bidder. Ultimately, we were so pleased to be able to contribute to the school by creating a wallpaper that reflects the true beauty of the nurturing Montessori community.

9-22-12 - 3D wallpaper at Pratt inspires us again

Designer/Professor Extraordinaire Sarah Strauss with a NY Toile

So happy to be invited again by our friend, Sarah Strauss, an innovative designer and professor at Pratt Institute School of Art & Design in Brooklyn, NY, to review her student’s work, along with our artist/architect friend, Jessica Jane Perkel. Each semester a fresh crop of students is asked to create a 3D wallpaper design which, ideally, is beautiful, engaging, clever, and technically feasible, with and without the iconic 3D glasses.

Everyone enjoys the thrill of the 3D experience

Robertson gets a closer look at a pattern composed of lace trimming

Not sure how we would approach the task, so it is always thrilling to see what gets pinned to the walls by these diversely talented students. This time, I was especially excited by the subject matter of the work. Thought was put into conveying a complex narrative, as well as designing a decorative pattern – with surprising elements like raining frogs, naked ladies, cassette tapes, corn kernels, microscopic bacteria, plastic bags and lace trim. Thanks for allowing us to be a part of the conversation!

2-16-12 - pratt student wallpaper – seeing in 3D for the third time

We jumped at the chance to return to Pratt Institute School of Art & Design to review the student work in our friend Sarah Strauss‘ class. Asked to design repeat wallpaper patterns in 3D, the students worked to create personal and striking works that look good with and without the signature red and blue glasses. Such fun to discuss the joys and trials of pattern design with this passionate group of students. Thanks Sarah!

9-22-11 - pratt student 3D wallpaper take 2

Pratt wallpaper review 2

Happily asked back by our friend, Sarah Strauss, a multi-talented designer and professor at Pratt Institute School of Art & Design in Brooklyn, NY, to review another round of wallpapers designed by her students in the Ornament & Decoration class. The wallpaper not only needed to succeed in being a repeat pattern, but also needed to be 3D. Not sure how I would go about tackling this bold challenge, but we really enjoyed discussing the projects and the world of wallpaper with this talented group – not to mention wearing the classic 3D specs. Thanks for having us back Sarah!

2-17-11 - pratt student 3D wallpaper

Pratt review Feb, 2011

Our friend, Sarah Strauss, a multi-talented designer and professor at Pratt Institute School of Art & Design in Brooklyn, NY, invited us to review her student’s recent project, along with our artist/architect friend, Jessica Jane Perkel. Challenged to create 3D wallpaper, her students explored many themes and worked through the ups and downs of repeats and scale, with the added layer of attempting to create a 3D effect. The review was super fun – 3D glasses and all – and we so enjoyed meeting the diverse group of students and sharing our feedback on their patterns, as well as the realities of manufacturing and marketing wallpaper. Thanks Sarah!
