We are twenty2.
We design patterns. We breathe color. We live for texture. We snap photos - lots of them. We are inspired by little things; reflections, manhole covers, old cars. We are modernists. We love our grandmas.
kyra and robertson hartnett
twenty2 is born.
A multi-disciplinary firm, specializing in brand identity and interior design, we create graphics and interiors for retailers, as well as full service residential projects.
Robertson sees a wallpaper revival on the horizon - even though it is seldom used in modern interiors at this time. After years of creating wall murals for retail environments, we are ready to bring our graphic sensibility to the residential wall.
We research and design for two years before the debut of our first collection of hand-printed wallpapers at ICFF in New York City.
"The principals of twenty2 combine art and commerce for wallpaper with a twist"
We make fabric too.
We play with scale and color to create handprinted fabrics that compliment our wallpapers, debuting the range at 100% Design in London.
Designtex invites twenty2 to design a collection of commercial wallcoverings and textiles.
The result is a vast suite of entirely new twenty2 patterns designed for easy mixing and matching in materials suited for commercial applications.
The coordinating wallcoverings and textiles garner the ICFF Editors Award for Best Wallcovering.
Expanding our collection of wallpapers and fabrics, we introduce new patterns, including Montague, an oversized gingko leaf print inspired by the leaves that scatter each Fall on our Brooklyn street.
Our celebrated commercial wallcovering and textile collection for Designtex is featured by Dwell Magazine on their television show for the Fine Living network.
"Kyra and Robertson Hartnett create a revolution in the wallcovering industry."
We invent Wallbands - DIY wall decor for the creative modernist.
The collection of prepasted bands of pattern are designed to be used vertically, horizontally or diagonally.
Our early wallpapers printed on jute grasscloth continue to be among our most popular.
We extend this niche by introducing 7 signature jute grasscloths colors that coordinate with our wallpapers and fabrics.
These earth-friendly wallcoverings can also be used as a ground for a custom twenty2 print.
Pushing for a broader commitment to earthfriendly products, our manufacturing is entirely converted to water-based inks.
Continuing to push our own design vernacular, we introduce two of our punchiest wallpapers to date.
The bands of tulips in Promenade are inspired by the tulip beds abloom along the Brooklyn Heights Promenade steps from our home.
Peekaboo, created from the digits 22, becomes a new twenty2 icon.
"ď...helped along by husband-and-wife design team Kyra and Robertson Hartnett of twenty2."
We are honored by the opportunity to design a room in the Kips Bay Showhouse in New York City.
We paper every surface of the bathroom in our Columbia Heights pattern and create a multi-media installation featuring our own photography paired with audio of the NYC streets.
The New York Times declares it their favorite room.
We select some of our favorite fabrics and create a ready-made pillow collection.
The hand-printed linen pillows filled with fluffy down add a splash of twenty2 to any room.
Inspired by our Promenade tulip print, NY design firm Michael Rosenberg & Associates, asks us to create a custom pattern for their room in the Hamptons Designer Showhouse in Hamptons, NY.
The resulting Sherwood pattern, printed on the signature twenty2 blue jute grasscloth, features oversized french tulips climbing and undulating along the walls of the spectacular master bedroom.
"A new generation of designers making wallpaper an essential part of contemporary interiors."

THE NEXT GARDE
"These designers are building the edge, even as we speak. What makes twenty2 so special is how Kyra and Robertson Hartnett blend color, pattern, sophistication, and wit, all tied up with a late modernist bow, in everything they do."
New York Magazine
Home Design Issue, May 2007
Our prints often find their way into kidsí rooms, so we are ready to play when we are invited to design a new range of patterns for a collection of nursery bedding.
We go off the wall with our new collection of hand-crafted carpets.
Riffs on some of our classic patterns, as well as a few new motifs designed just for the floor, these luxurious silk and wool carpets are made-to-order and can be created in our colorways or your own.
Country life beckons and we heed the call.
Moving to the hills of Northwest Connecticut, we begin a new chapter in Litchfield, drawing fresh inspiration for our life and designs.
A follow-up to our first commercial collection, the second twenty2 for Designtex range, offers us another chance to create bold patterns and colors suited for hospitality and corporate environments.
This time, we also explore texture, with two signature embossed wallcoverings that convey our aesthetic through the visual and the tactile.
IDEA IN DESIGN
"twenty2 creates modern graphics with time-tested handprinting techniques - so right now!."
We help to realize the vision of architects at Diller, Scofidio, Renfro in NYC, producing a 50í wall mural featuring the entire works of Shakespeare for the renovated Alice Tully Hall at Juilliard in NYC.
We expand our assortment of grasscloth wallcoverings. Entirely earth-friendly, sustainable and biodegradable, the new range features 32 beautiful, useable hues in jute and sisal grasscloth, hemp burlap and paperweaves.
A dozen of these new wallcoverings can also be used as a ground for a custom twenty2 print and we look forward to seeing the results!
We launch The Design Pad - a forum for discussing our design process past and present, sharing points of inspiration and general twenty2 tidbits - allright... itís a blog.
The new twenty2.net site debuts.
Chock full of in situ images, information, and inspiration, the site now features e-commerce, trade accounts, downloadable tear sheets and The Design Pad (a behind-the-scenes look at our design process).
Our collection of earth-friendly grasscloth wallcoverings grows with the addition of 20 new lustrous shades and textures.
Ten years ago we were two twenty-somethings with a wallpaper dream. To create clean graphics, using distinctive color combinations and materials, all printed locally.
We kick off our second decade of making walls happy with a burst of new pattern and texture.
Our Bianca pattern is a watery, sparkly, symphony of muted color and shimmer. Dutton, inspired by our favorite tree, is at once a striking geometric and a large scale floral motif.
We broaden our role in the world of wallpaper by creating an in-house digital printing division. Bringing the vision of designers and artists to life, we offer expert consultation and unparalelled service.
OUR FAVORITE WALLPAPER
"twenty2 grasscloth designs are in the back of my head all the time. I really enjoy the subtle prints they put on top of the grasscloth. I think these would be just as beautiful now as they would be 20, 30 years from now."
DESIGN*SPONGE, Grace Bonney
Black Book: Wallpapers We Trust, January 2014

We are honored to be selected to record audio clips with our impressions of selected patterns from the Cooper Hewitt archive featured in their new, interactive Immersion Room.
While listening to the audio, the museum guests use a huge touch screen table to select patterns from the archive and project them onto the walls for a fully immersive visual experience.
